President Anwar El-Sadat, the third President of Egypt, was assassinated on October 6, 1981, during a military parade in Cairo commemorating the October 1973 War (Yom Kippur War). He was attacked by members of the extremist group Egyptian Islamic Jihad, led by Khalid Islambouli, who opposed Sadat’s peace treaty with Israel and the Camp David Accords. Sadat was killed instantly, along with several others, while many dignitaries—including then Vice President Hosni Mubarak—survived. His death shocked Egypt and the world, as he had been a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a central figure in shaping Middle Eastern politics.
