Johnny English, released in 2003, is a spy action comedy film directed by Peter Howitt. The screenplay was written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and William Davies. This movie is a collaborative British-French production, backed by StudioCanal and Working Title Films, and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The film stars Rowan Atkinson in the lead role, alongside Natalie Imbruglia, Ben Miller, and John Malkovich. It marks the inaugural entry in the Johnny English film series and serves as both a parody and tribute to the spy genre, particularly the James Bond film series, as well as Rowan Atkinson’s iconic Mr. Bean character. Additionally, the character draws inspiration from Atkinson’s hapless spy persona featured in a series of Barclaycard adverts in the United Kingdom during the 1990s.
