On February 18, 1978, Egyptian forces raided Larnaca International Airport near Larnaca, Cyprus. The Egyptian intervention aimed to rescue hostages from a hijacking incident. Assassins had killed the writer Youssef El Sebai, the Minister of Culture during President Anwar Sadat’s era. The hijackers then took several Arabs hostage who were attending a conference in Nicosia. Cypriot forces were attempting to negotiate with the hijackers at the airport when Egyptian authorities decided to send special forces units without Cypriot permission, launching an attack on the airport. The Cypriot forces clashed with the Egyptian troops, leading to a breakdown in political relations between Egypt and Cyprus for several years.
