Laurel and Hardy, an iconic comedy duo from the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema, were comprised of Stan Laurel, an Englishman born in 1890, and Oliver Hardy, an American born in 1892. They embarked on their collaborative career during the silent film era and later made a seamless transition into the world of “talkies.” Throughout the late 1920s to the mid-1950s, they achieved international acclaim for their brand of slapstick comedy.
In their comedic partnership, Stan Laurel portrayed the hapless and childlike character, while Oliver Hardy assumed the role of the pompous bully. Their distinctive theme song, known as “The Cuckoo Song,” “Ku-Ku,” or “The Dance of the Cuckoos” (composed by Hollywood’s T. Marvin Hatley), accompanied the opening credits of their films and became just as iconic as their trademark bowler hats.
