The Yacoubian Building is a novel penned by the Egyptian writer Alaa-Al-Aswany. In 2006, it was adapted into a film with the same title, and in 2007, it was turned into a television series.
Originally published in Arabic in 2002 and later translated into English in 2004, the book is ostensibly set in 1990, around the time of the first Gulf War. It takes the form of a roman à clef and offers a harsh critique of modern Egyptian society, tracing its trajectory since the 1952 Revolution. The story unfolds in the heart of downtown Cairo
