The story follows Leigh Gerard, a bar owner who is attacked and turned into a vampire by a rogue bloodsucker. She is found by Lucian Argeneau, a two-thousand-year-old, grumpy vampire hunter, whose job is to terminate rogue vampires. Due to circumstances, Lucian finds himself responsible for tutoring Leigh on immortal life. He soon realizes he cannot mind-control her, a sign that she is his destined “life mate,” a concept both are wary of due to past relationship traumas.
